Moving Day

We started our moving day off on the right foot by walking to breakfast at The Biscuit which was amazing as usual. It was good to at least have that positive experience under our belts when we then went to pick up our Budget rental truck and were met with a hiccup in our plans. We had reserved a 16' truck, but despite that truck being on the premises, we were told we couldn't have that truck because someone else had also reserved it. Why the other person's reservation had more clout than ours we will never know. We were frustratingly faced with settling for either a 24' truck with a power lift and diesel fuel requirement or a 12' truck with no ramp. The 24' truck seemed ridiculously overkill for our requirements, so we reluctantly chose for the 12' truck and crossed our fingers that we could move everything in one trip.

Brandon and I put our Tetris skills to the test in packing the moving truck and sweated profusely in the humid weather. We took some water and monster cookie breaks and even had a chance to catch up with a former patient of mine that saw us while driving past and stopped to chat. In the end, I am happy and relieved to report that we did indeed move everything in one trip! And now we have bragging rights that our belongings fit in such a truck, even with our giant couch taking up a considerable amount of space!

My sister is generously allowing us to store our stuff in her garage and basement and even set up our bed in her spare bedroom. We can't thank her enough. We also are so thankful that our friend Matt came and helped us move everything out of the truck, sparing some of our already waning energy. He was duly rewarded with a good workout moving boxes and dinner from Cherry Deli.

We eventually returned the moving truck and our achy bodies back to Holland and slept one last night in sleeping bags on the floor of our house. In the morning, we cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. We got it so clean we were tempted just to move right back in again. But, our awesome landlord stopped by and instead we handed over the keys and reminisced over the last few years in the house. We also had the chance to take the lovely mile walk downtown and back to the house again when we met a friend for sushi. It was a good way to say goodbye to the house and neighborhood. As we drove away there were a couple tears because of all the great memories, but now I suppose we have more memories to make elsewhere.

  1. Re. the truck, as Jerry Seinfeld would say, "...see, you know how to *take* a reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation...it's really the most important part..."
