You Can't Take The Sky From Me

One of my main goals for our time in Nebraska was to make my brother Blake watch through all of my favorite TV show: Firefly, as well as the movie that sums up the series: Serenity. We started out the month a bit slow. We always had to wait for the boys to go to bed since it isn't exactly a kid friendly show. We also had to compete with late baseball games. So we were limited in the number of convenient times we could watch. It is also the type of show that throws a lot of strange stuff at you at the beginning of the series to introduce you to the story line and characters. When we tell people it's a sci-fi western, it doesn't exactly help sell the show. But once you get two or three episodes in, the story-telling is so good that people are usually hooked. I think that was true for Blake too. The first few episodes were rough, and we mixed in a few episodes of Doctor Who as a buffer show. But eventually he came around and had a lot of interest in finishing the series.

Despite procrastinating on it a bit at the beginning of the month we were able to accomplish our goal of finishing up the show and watch the movie. It took a couple of late nights on our last weekend there to watch through multiple episodes in a row, but we did it. We watched three episodes on Friday night, three on Saturday night, and the movie on Sunday night.  For our Saturday viewing I originally thought that the last disc only had two episodes on it. Once we figured out that we had an extra episode to watch, Katie and Blake gave me a hard time about it. But I boldly proclaimed that they should all be thankful that there was one more episode to watch because the show is so great, and that it was well worth the bit of sleep we'd miss out on. And as it turns out that last episode is one of my favorites. Win win!

What also made that time together special was that we paired our binge watching time together with sampling some local Nebraska craft beer. Blake picked up two six packs of a variety of beer from Zipline Brewing Company. So each night we sampled two to four beers, splitting each bottle between us. We'd each give our input on how we liked it. I don't know... it was just fun. For me it was the icing on the cake for this already really awesome time together.

Sampler of beer from Empyrean Brewing at Lazlo's Restaurant. It was not the exact beer we drank while watching firefly, but it captures one of my favorite parts of this trip: getting to share and explore our similar interests.

p.s. For those who are confused by the title of this post, it's part of the Firefly theme song
